Cameroon qualify for 2014 World Cup

Cameroon became the third African nation to secure their place at the Brazil 2014 World Cup by thumping Tunisia 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Pierre Webo and Benjamin Moukandjo made it 2-0 at the break, before Ahmed Akaichi got one back for the The Carthage Eagles, before Jean Makoun hit home twice to book a place for the Indomitable Lions in Brazil.

The first leg ended 0-0 last month, and Volker Finke’s men knew that a loss at Stade Omnisport Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé would see them fail to qualify for the tournament for only the second time since 1986.

But they dominated from the outset to become the third African nation to reach the 2014 World Cup, after Nigeria and Ivory Coast on Saturday, and the 24th overall.

Webo opened the scoring after just four minutes, after a defensive mix-up by the Tunisians that allowed the Fenerbahce striker to fire across goal with a cool finish, with the ball hitting the post before bouncing in.

Moukandjo made a driving run on the half hour mark, before placing a low right-footed strike past Ben Cherifia.

The Nancy striker was booked for his celebration, during which he lost his shirt in the crowd.

It was game on, however, when Akaichi pulled one back for Tunisia shortly after half-time, with a great volley from the Esperance player.

But just six minutes later Makoun powered in a header from a pinpoint near-post corner to put the game beyond doubt.

And he was on target again four minutes from time, when he slotted into an empty net on the rebound after Ben Cherifia tipped away a Choupo-Moting strike against the post.
